San Marin Science Classes
We offer a wide range of interesting and rigorous science classes at San Marin. We strongly recommend that all students take at least four years of science in high school since science classes are rigorous, hands-on, fun, and teach logical thinking skills. Students who are interested in pursuing science in college or as a career might want to take five or more science classes while in high school.
We offer 3 different options of STEM Marin Programs for students who have an interest in a particular area of science. For more information about STEM Marin, please visit our website at STEMMarin.nusd.org. Those programs are:
Comprehensive Pathway:
For students who choose not be part of a small program cohort, we offer a ton of great science courses from which you can choose your own science path:
If a student is considering going to a 4-year college, they should take at least:
If student is considering pursuing science as a career/major in college, we recommend culminating with:

We offer 3 different options of STEM Marin Programs for students who have an interest in a particular area of science. For more information about STEM Marin, please visit our website at STEMMarin.nusd.org. Those programs are:
- STEM Marin: Comprehensive - Comprehensive is our standard San Marin Science pathway. Students take Biology in 9th grade, Conceptual Physics in 10th grade, Chemistry in 11th grade and a science elective in 12th grade. Students can add on any science electives and/or add on our Cisco Networking Academy or Multi-Media Design CTE (career technical education) pathways.
- STEM Marin: Biotechnology - for students interested in biotechnology and microbiology careers. Students take two science classes each year (8 science classes during high school), each with a biotechnology CTE focus. Courses include Biology and Tech of Bio (9th), Chemistry for Biotechnology and Conceptual Physics (10th), Biotechnology 1 and a STEM elective of student choice (11th), and Biotechnology 2 and a STEM elective of student choice (12th).
- STEM Marin: Engineering - for students who are really passionate about science and engineering and want to take two science classes each year of high school (8 science/engineering classes during high school) taught in a project-based format. Courses include Conceptual Physics and Principles of Engineering (9th), STEM Biology and STEM Ecology (10th), Chemistry and a STEM Elective of student choice (11th), and Senior Capstone Engineering and a STEM Elective of student choice (12th).

For students who choose not be part of a small program cohort, we offer a ton of great science courses from which you can choose your own science path:
If a student is considering going to a 4-year college, they should take at least:
- Three years of science including
- 9th grade: Biology
- 10th grade: Conceptual Physics
- 11th grade: Chemistry
- 12th grade: At least one other college prep science course (marine bio, biotechnology, AP Bio, AP Physics, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science, etc.)
If student is considering pursuing science as a career/major in college, we recommend culminating with:
- 12th grade: AP Bio (if medical/bio interest), AP Chem or AP Physics (if physical science/math interest), Marine Bio, Biotech, AP Computer Science (if tech interest), or AP Environmental Science.
