Other San Marin Science Classes, or What To Take Next Year

We offer a wide range of upper level science classes at San Marin.  We strongly recommend that all students take at least four years of science in high school since science classes are rigorous, hands-on, and teach logical thinking skills.  Students who are interested in pursuing science in college or as a career might want to take five or more science classes while in high school.

We offer a number of STEM Programs for students who have an interest in a particular area of science. Those programs are:
  • Biotechnology Academy - for students interested in biotechnology careers. Students take science, English, and social studies together as a cohort. Courses include Biology for Biotechnology (9th), Chemistry for Biotechnology (10th), Biotechnology 1 (11th), and Biotechnology 2 (12th) as well as any other science/STEM courses students want to add. For more information, check out their website at SanMarinBiotechAcademy.weebly.com
  • SEA: Social and Environmental Justice Academy - for students interested in environmental science and engineering and social justice. Students take science, English, and social studies together as a cohort. Courses include Biology (9th), Chemistry or Conceptual Physics (10th), Environmental Science (11th), and Environmental Engineering (12th) as well as any other science/STEM courses students want to add. For more information, check out their website at SMSEA.weebly.com.
  • STEM Marin - for students who are really passionate about science and want to take two science classes each year of high school (8 science classes during high school) taught in a project-based format. Courses include Conceptual Physics and Principles of Engineering (9th), Biology and Biotechnology 1 (10th), Chemistry and a STEM Elective of student choice (11th), and Senior Capstone Engineering and a STEM Elective of student choice (12th). Standard Pathway:
Additionally, for students who choose not be part of a small program we offer a ton of great science courses from which you can choose your own science path:

If a student is considering going to a 4-year college, they should take at least:
  1. Three years of science including
    1. 9th grade: Biology
    2. 10th grade: Conceptual Physics or Chemistry
    3. 11th and 12th grade: At least one other college prep science course (marine bio, biotechnology, conceptual physics, chemistry, AP Bio, AP Physics, AP Chemistry,

If student is considering pursuing science as a career/major in college, we recommend:
  1. 9th grade: Biology
  2. 10th grade: Conceptual Physics or Chemistry
  3. 11th grade: Chemistry or Conceptual Physics (or AP Physics if qualified – taking precalc and independent worker) - whichever one you haven't already taken.
  4. 12th grade: AP Bio (if medical/bio interest), AP Chem (if physical science/math interest), Marine Bio, Biotech, AP Computer Science, AP Physics
